Too much info on matters of faceless people. But this arc explains that it's not clear cut if she is a horrible mother. I'd actually question Harsen after this. He is sneaking around, doesn't communicate with his wife, incredibly cold and dismissive with her.

Yep, depression. It sometimes happens after giving birth, but I suspect it might've started that way but now it's taking over her life. And sending her away somewhere by herself, leaving her alone, won't going to help.
Looking at the society described here, I'm not sure they know what to do with depression (although someone realized that she needs to "rest her mind" which sounds like a good start, but it's only that: a start). Seems like it's been festering and will be festering for a few more years as we've seen.
I just... when do we get back to the "present" time? And what will be Harsen's reaction then? Will he see her sincerity and heart? Or will he turn away from her (troubles) again?

And let's not forget how difficult it must've been for little Vincente in all this. Neither of his parents seem to particularly care about him. Harsen might admonish Ercella for not having a meal with Vincente or not spending time with him, but I don't see him doing it any differently. Of course, in that society, taking care of children was the job of the woman and men could care less about the matter. Really, really sad.

Basically lots of deaths happening. Her sis lost her baby, after hearing about it only 2 months prior.
The king kills his wife and daughter and the first prince due to rumors of a romantic relationship.
Her guy friend that she planned on marrying before Harsen lost his sister and father who both died by suicide. And on top of all that, her struggle with being a “proper mother” to her kid.

Ercella starts blaming herself for all these bad things happening because depression’s a bitch. She’s highly anxious and paranoid about all these events and it’s making her depression worse

As someone who has depression before I know that feeling.

When everything seems right and you know you should be happy yet you wake up crying with no reason. hen you ask yourself when did things go wrong yet there is no answer. And when every little wrong thing sells your fault.

Lots are annoued about these depression flashbacks but these episodes are necessary for us readers to understand the characters development.

Mental sickness is real, Ercella needs help and support but she did not get it. Her husband could've been there with her but don't know what to do, he wants to help her but it's not enough. Depression is making her deteriorate, a girl in her early 20s, so young to crumble. So can we really blame her? Them? Maybe blame humanity, the rotten society, the ignorance and selfishness which is still the problem today but worse.
