I feel like everyone is hating on Dowun. From what we've seen so far, he might not be the nicest guy in the world but he is be pretty similar to other anti-hero MLs. if the bodyguard wasn't shown at all, everyone would just be wondering when Dowun's icy exterior would begin to melt. Personally I would find a redemption arc for him a lot more interesting than her hooking up with the nice guy bodyguard. The only thing the bodyguard has going for him right now is that he saved her when she was a kid; which she already paid back for when she pardoned his execution.

A dowun redemption arc is definitely more interesting. Probably something like she finds his schemes and banishes him and he learns soemthing perhaps.

It's so funny when I don't see nearly as much hate for 💯 percent assholes like daughter of this house or others than for dowun.

He's calculating and ruthless to a necessary degree if you want that kind of power.

Idk if I want to like Dowun or not. He's always wanted the throne and educated Hong Lyon for that sole purpose but he might've grown attached to her since she loved him as children. Although like we've seen with his brother and Asara, he doesn't mind sacrificing those close to him, like chess pawns, to get what he wants. What an interesting character.

From reading the comment sections, I find it interesting that shallow "cold" arrogant manipulative mls that act hot blooded and oppressive towards their heroine gets more positive overall reception, while cold manipulative MLs that actually feels that he knows how to think (not just protagonist plot armor) and doesn't get head over heels for a girl just because she's the heroine gets colder and skeptical reception. The same thing was happening with Cheese in the trap. It feels like half the readers was stuck on the first impression.

Maybe the difference is there's distrust on ML because we're not shown what's going on inside his mind. He doesn't lose his cool and perform the usual acts of love we're familiar with. He doesn't act like what a "cold" ml that's in love is supposed to be.

On the other hand, I kinda like that the ML is cold. It's a bit refreshing and I find it as more realistic outtake on what people with this personality is like. They don't usually turn 180 degree with people they care about. They act in their own way. Dowun doesn't believe in feelings and thinks it's something that gets in the way. Still, he put his bet on the MC when she's disfavored and have nothing. It was a deal. MC thought she offered herself and blood on that, but it's actually the same for Dowun. He shared with her his plans, thoughts, and beliefs. Sacrificed his brother. Hide things that could make her heart waver or feel guilt (poisoning of her father and existence of the bodyguard). He could have manipulated her obvious feelings towards him to his advantage, but instead he turned her cold because wearing your heart on your sleeve is like asking others to stab it. I think it's safe to say that he sees her as his life partner. People say that he's manipulating her, but he made it so she's aware of her surroundings and the situation and put her in the higher seat where she still get the final say. I don't think he's as cold as others say towards her.

He's a kuudere/ tsundere/ yandere without the dere though

@Winterspring dude thanks for existing. I honestly almost drop this because it really is confusing, I mean the tag was romance lol. But now, I saw ur comment, it made sense than other people here judging our ML, he's the male lead for a reason.

@Eevee3 Waiting for his redemption and hook up with heroine is basically the most mainstream thing in all shoujo/isekai lol, it'll be more interesting if they actually turn into real enemy and try to outsmart each other, in fact the heroine ends up with 2nd ML instead of 1st will serve more as plot twist... but we still don't even know who's the real ML here, as the Bodyguard is the first guy she met despite the title (Shoujo rule).

Btw there are some hints like our heroine actually has nothing but her title, nobody actually on her side but her maid and probably the bodyguard, everything is controlled by Dowun and his clan (stamp without telling her), she had bad image as "furniture" his clan knows that she is doing nothing because all works are done by Dowun (as Asara said), she's the one who potentially in real danger here because they could just toss her anytime and nobody will even care (Villagers said they don't care who's their leader as long as he/she good to them, chapter 23)

i don't think she actually happy with the situation, this is just for her survival and what Dowun wants her to be, a tool, is this even a healthy relationship? it'll be even sadder if they had a child, our heroine's worth is no more meanwhile Dowun's clan will life forever in luxury as the ruler, ideally she should just get love but as we can see the guy didn't even want to give her one, both are cold towards each other, will not be surprised if someday she wants to break free from him instead of hoping that her love will be mutual, change of heart isn't new like Akatsuki No Yona as some people said.

purple lady is probably in love with dowun to add to the drama lol. im gonna be so annoyed with her. im actually most curious about dowun, does he have feelings for mc that he just shuts out bc he values his goals more? or does he really not care about her at all and just his goals. also did mc get over her crush on him or does she too still have feelings but keeps it down bc of the turbulant circumstances that make their relationship icy. cant wait to find out.

Baek Han probably saved the MC back then because he saw himself in her. He was adopted, so he most likely had a rough childhood before the Baek family took him in. At some point he even said she was making the same face as him the first time he saw her.

I wonder what he thinks about the way she turned out to be. I really want to know more about him.

To the people arguing that no one would bat an eye if Dowun was the typical cold-hearted shoujo asshole, I think that what sets him apart from those characters is that as far as we know he doesn't give a damn about the MC. And don't forget that (apparently) he doesn't have a sad backstory to explain why he became so fucked up.

So far he's been simply an unlikeable character who's completely power-hungry and apparently doesn't love anyone, even his family.

But I bet that as soon as he starts showing that he has any sort of feelings for the MC, a bunch of readers that dislike him now will start shipping them. Especially if there's a sad childhood trauma backstory. If there's one, it's probably something to do with his mom (since she's completely out of the picture).
