The story is about battle of rationality and compassion (represented by the protagonist), against forces of ignorance and evil (represented by shaman, but also by many people in the central government).
So far, the biggest victory of the forces of evil was making Rihaizam, an alchemist, into a fungus monster. Because unlike him, they don't have the brains to be an actual threat.
