@Kampfarsch I think what they mean by "choose" is that when they hit 12 whichever gender they feel like they want to be, that's what gender their hormones shift to. It's not like they hit a button on a screen and suddenly oops all penises.

For those that didn't know caterpillars cannot reproduce, they just don't have the bits needed. Butterflies and moths can but they have rudimentary digestive systems and don't live for very long.
