That scene on p. 28 with the children giving him 'protective items' was so touching. Consider that they're orphans, and those toys were probably the only ones that they had; they were certainly very precious to those kids. Consider also that the kids gave those things to protect the MC, meaning that the teddy or pinwheel or whatever was what some poor orphan kid cried into every night for comfort, or was the one thing in their tiny little lives that gave them any joy. It's really sweet, and really sad.

Kane lays his sword on the ground when he's picking herbs, not out of kindness or great talent, but because it would get in the way, digging into the ground whenever he crouched down.
