It's a tad confusing whether or not one should root for the guy, although it's a bit weird to point it so late in the story.
The guy essentially owes all of his recent success to divine protection, which made him receive the attention and care of incredibly influential and impressionable people, which then gave way to more divine protection; And at this point, it has become an absurd situation in which it's worthy to invest in him, because people have already invested in him.
This guy just snowballs "luck" like crazy.
