I'm the author of the "mess".

The previous translator (Amarrez) used "crush" for Oshi, so I kept it, but I'm not too fond of it either because it implies, at this point, when she knows "onii-san"'s gender, something not intended (a romantic crush).

At the same time, there's not really a word for Oshi in English, except maybe "fave", which is mid, so whatever.

That’s the only weird thing in this chapter, and I agree it’s not at all easy to translate.

Early chapters had me flabbergasted sometimes, though.
“Embawkward” (“hazui” could just be left as embarrassing or even “cringe”), “jerkface” (dassa is just “lame”. Changes a description of behaviour into of the person) stick out in my memory, on top of the very title of the series.

It was inconsistent in translation, if terms and tone.
I’m glad you seem to be committed to consistency.

Translation choices are tricky to discuss. Especially when you confront "accuracy" with "mood". While "hazui" means embarrassing, it's a really colloquial version of it (it's short for hazukashii), so I don't see any problem in using another colloquial idiom. And "cringe" isn't the right meaning. It's how she feels, not the situation.
Anyway, the author uses a lot of colloquial JP and it's never easy to translate or render the mood in these cases. Especially when there are meanings behind the literal meanings. It'll always be best effort since I'm not a professional.

“Ambawkward” is something people say?! “Cringe” used to describe situations at least as much as feelings. “X is cringe” “this happened. It was so cringe”. Is it just really rare, now? I mean, if so, that’s all cool. They’re teenagers.
The Kids in Japan seem to be ending the names of guy friends with 氏 to indicate close friendship. That wasn’t a thing even five years ago, afaik.

I don’t even get the way The Kids use “vibe”. ”I’m gonna vibe to the vibes because this is a vibe”. It’s like how we used “sick” in the 90s. As in: for everything, especially when we didn’t know what we meant.
“Aw, sick!” (That’s disgusting) “Aw, sick!” (That’s great!) “Sick!” (I agree!) “Sick, dude…” (I wish I had not heard that) “Siiick!” (I’m so proud of you). “Aw, sick! Siiiick! That’s so sick that it’s sick! Sick, dude!” Go back four years and we could have a two minute conversation with “Dude”. Way more versatile than “vibe” or “sick” in 1994.
Every generation has terms that leave the previous and next scratching their head and… cringing. The Kids These Days wear shirts for bands they’ve never heard. We had… Pantera and Nelly? Something more confusing, I’m sure. Is there still makeup with big flakes of glitter? I know heteronormativity was more pervasive. Jerry Seinfeld? Mike Meyers?
Then it comes back and the people that did it before headdesk.
I didn’t think oversized clothes would come back, but here we are! I’m so glad that straight-leg jeans are back, though!
Imma go see if I can get puffy skate shoes… comfy as heck.

The episode with Koga playing basketball she mentions romantic feelings, but it’s conceptual more than specific.
It’s all very subtle stuff and it’s hard to suss out until a story is complete.
Translation is a frustrating thing.
RAMBLE:
I was trying to translate something Jewish into Japanese (long story) and “the” is a HUGE thing in Hebrew (especially in a religious context), and possessives aren’t. So with no way to make things specific and it being hard to avoid の things hit a brick wall.
I’d need to add so many footnotes to make anything make any sense at all. That sort of thing is not uncommon in Jewish texts in general, but this was to be targeted at people who know basically nothing.
There’s also one “you”, “she” and “he” in Hebrew, and SO MANY declensions. Second-person plural, possessive form of a noun.
Also two notably different pronunciation systems used in different communities, with subdivisions. (Totefot and Toitefois and the same word written the same way. Ha’aretz, ho’oretz. Shabbat, Shabbos. The latter is an easier transliteration task, but it’s less common in the past century, though reviving in recent decades.)
