@coldpray You can't 'fake being ill' to get out of the church. You suggested she go to the church when Rude was kicked out. At that point, the 'Hero' was still on top of his fame. He wasn't "deemed incompetent". The church would not have listened to her. Her only option would have been to "quit" the church, which you often can't do. If she tried, then yes, she might have been executed. You can always raise another 'Saint'(soldier), but you can't have people doubting the influence of the church.

@LoupDeGarou

It's not that the whole party wanted Rude out, Kygras wanted him out of the picture. Kygras used his outer shell being shaved as excuse. The other party members had no say because Kygras was the designated hero and party leader. You can probably say they have the right to vote, but they actually don't. Nin is loaned by the church and she doesn't have any say on party composition. The twins were part of the contract with the guild, so they don't have any say either. The two new girls certainly wouldn't say anything since they were brought into a hero party.

So it's all Kygras's fault.

Joan of Arc was tried and executed with no legal and religious basis; they just really wanted her dead. Of course, years later
it was deemed a miscarriage of justice and she was canonized...
And there are tons of saints or their equivalents from all kinds of religions that get martyred.

And I think if anyone deserves recognition; it’s the Minotaur. Here’s hoping he gets a promotion for his good work.

@StorminUrAss What? Were we reading the same thing? Nin was defending him and didn't want him to leave the party in the first place. According to this very chapter, the hero party is made up of contract workers (the twins), and a healer assigned by the church (Nin), so it doesn't sound like she could just ditch the party if she wanted to until the hero failed four missions. Which she promptly did while also telling the hero off for being an idiot and not realizing how his power worked. About the only thing she didn't do is take back the cursed sword that the Hero stole when Rude left.

I guess you can blame her for saving the hero, but it didn't really go that way. Nin may have ordered the retreat, but the short haired twin was the one that picked Kygras up to escape the minotaur and the long hair twin was the one who used dungeon walk to get them out of there. So the twins were the ones to "save" the hero. I guess you can blame the healer for that as well, but I'm pretty sure the church wouldn't take kindly to a healer that doesn't heal her party members.

Come on people, Nin did nothing wrong. She's the Saint remember, she can't leave the kyrgas's party because he has the "Hero"(lol) status.

You guys being mad against nin is like the "Hero"(lol) blaming his party members. 🤣

Nin hate is baffling. Did we read the same thing because it was only the Hero who was an asshole. Because Nin was always supportive of Rude and wish she could party with him longer. I reread from chapter 1... Cuz I cant fathom how Nin is on the wrong in any way shape or form...

@cor3zone now tell me where did I mention her quitting the church before our "beloved hero" fucks up at raid? I only mentioned she should've done trying after the 1st fail so she already had a basis for her future actions, not waiting him to fuck up 4 freaking times. Stop reading between lines again.
edit: @Sep10trion agree with minotaur being the MVP of this story. Can't tell quite well whether the manga based medieval times or not it really depends on era, but yeah over-religious people are scary at times.

@coldpray One failed raid is not enough, it could just be the new party members adjusting. Sorry I misread, but my point still stands.

There's a reason they have the '4 fails'-rule.

to be fair, it's probably better that she waited for four failures. A single mistake from the hero might have been forgiven by the church and public, making her attempts to leave seen as hasty and shifting the blame for future mistakes onto her. After these four failures, the blame is squarely on the hero and not her, Rude, or sheer luck.

@cor3zone "church .... orders the return of their saint when there are labyrinth raids with a high risk of continued failure" not quite '4 times rule', other townsmen saying about 4 times, him basically saying 'hero failed too many times, so'. Fair enough, but she still could've done after 2nd attempt if we interpret it as a 'continued failure', also the church seems like is quite generous letting hero fail 4 times.

@coldpray It's the same person saying that. The men are not talking, it's the mother explaining to the child. "But if that Hero fails four times in a row, then well... Even the church [...] orders the return of their saint" The phrasing, "orders" instead of 'would order', implies it's a certain thing, a rule, not just expected.

Edit: I may be wrong about this rule bit, but it hardly matters anyways. The fact that the church waited for four public failures shows one is not enough. The fact that they dispatch Nin, the saint, to fight in life-threatening situations shows that she is not that important and has little say in church decisions.

Min blaming got me baffled. Not the comments section content I was expecting.

I do find it interesting how corporate/legally tied up the hero party is. Hero is a government supplied skill. The rogue(or whatever they were) twins are a long term guild contract. The healer is required to stay with government assigned healer for what amounts to until previously decided conditions are met.

In most tales the hero party is formed via providence, so this is... Refreshing? Different, anyway.

Lastly, the fact that the hero is a scrawny bishie-ish dude not because arbitrary design choices but because of him being a lazy bum who doesn't train is pretty darn funny to me.

Honestly, on the basis of just chapter 1, I did not have a good impression of Nin. She let the person she cared about leave alone and went with the abuser. It was only in this chapter when they revealed she was put into that party by the church that her actions became palatable.

As for the couple still stuck with the failure, their contract is with the guild. With the knowledge of the problem with the hero's skill, I'm a bit surprised that the guild didn't reassign them to someone else the moment that the church decided he no longer was a hero.
