Just because the dad isn't convenient for the plot progression, the author decided to kill him off. A rather lame/easy way out.

Very dumb plot twist. Makes the guy's father out to be a horrible, horrible uncaring piece of garbage. His wife is gone, but his son is still there and feels the loss of his mother just as badly as he did, and now he just added onto the trauma by killing himself.
