It was implied to be him trying to send a message to other people thinking of trying the same thing so they would stay away. Then the whole noticing of the discarded snake skin, implying he was a snake that had shed it's old skin.

It's just a bit more of that 'rationality' = 'cruelty', which again, kind of lazy, rationality is just a mode of thought, if you do cruel things in the name of rationality, usually it's because you just want to do cruel things.
