The more I reread this chapter the more upset I get at Aiden...

Yes, he loves her, and what he feared would happen happened, and it would have happened no matter how he handled it.
So instead of having faith in the person he loves, he chose to be cowardly and only tell her after he had made her promise him she'd lose something important to her if she left him. That is extremely manipulative and Wendy is more than in all her rights to feel angered and offended.
If I were her, I would have been more hurt about how he treated me than for him being a different species altogether (prejudices and how "things" would work in between species aside).
The basis of a marriage should be trust, and he didn't trust her and has now made sure that she can't truthfully trust him either.

@nobile She wouldn't have even given him the time of day if she knew he was a dragon from the beginning. The whole academy would have been in a complete uproar if folks knew there was a dragon strolling around the premises. How would he have been able to try to approach and woo her after that, huh? This was the one and only way to allow her to get to know him as a person, not as a nameless example of an extremely dangerous species. What you are suggesting is, in practice, Aiden simply giving up on her and likely leaving the whole institution, never to be seen again. If he had decided to stay, he would have been the local sightseeing attraction most probably surrounded by all the important people in the country, trying to get on his good side, as long as he seemed friendly, or by soldiers and battle mages armed to the teeth if he appeared unfriendly.

So, I'll have to disagree with you 100%. Sure, he wasn't completely honest, but it was because of having no choice. His chances were low to begin with, as he still had decided to tell her the truth before they get married. His only sliver of hope was that Wendy would start to love him as Aiden, not just as a human or a dragon, before he reveals the truth.

@Kaarme I agree that telling everyone that he was a dragon from the very start would not go well.

But he definitely should have told her BEFORE he made her promise him things. The moment the relationship was about to change from "boss and employee" to something more personal, he should have told her. Tying her with the threat of her losing her powers if she left him before she even knew that he wasn't who he said he was was wrong.

@nobile Telling her would have meant telling everyone if it had happened early on. She's a professor, or something along those lines, so if she knew there's a dragon posing as a human in the academy, she would have definitely reported it to relevant authorities. Now, I have to backpedal a little bit because of course it's possible those higher authorities would have wanted to keep it a secret, but it would have still ruined any prospects of a romance, no doubt, for numerous reasons.

Without that initial promise, I feel like he would have failed miserably even if he was just another human being. As soon as she sobered up after the first night, she began to reject him. He had to use his best efforts and wiles to gouge a promise out of her. Even after that it wasn't easy to win her over. So, in the beginning it didn't much matter if he was a human or not. With the par set that high, once again, revealing he's a dragon would have ruined everything. I'd say the dude could judge that by interacting with her. Now, after all that work invested in charming her and genuinely getting her to agree to the marriage, she still almost dropped him like a hot potato after hearing the truth. Sure, she feels betrayed, but it couldn't be helped. Maybe she realised it herself.

I don’t think either are that much at fault. Her reaction is completely reasonable as trust is a big part of relationships. But he also had his reasons for doing what he did.
