The purpose of comedy tag / Gag tag

The genre tag 'Comedy' seems to be misused, or too general as a tag.

Anything that involves comedy seems to be candidate for the 'Comedy' genre. This is very general and somewhat defeats the purpose of a tag, unless the aim of the tag is to exemplify manga which are devoid of comedy - at which the tag 'Serious' would be a better match.

As it stands, there is no way to search for comedy-focused manga specifically. I would like to suggest 'Gag' as a genre tag specifically for manga with a strong focus on comedy.

Examples of 'Comedy' genre tagged manga that involve, but are not focused, on comedy: Re:life, Jojo's, Vagabond, Kingdom, Kengen, Kaiju, Chikan, Kimetsu no Yaiba, Hero Academia, so forth.
Examples of 'Comedy' genre tagged manga that focus on comedy: Send my regards to Kenshiro, Grand Blue, Nichijou, Ride-On King, Yotsuba, Prison School, Beelzebub, GTO, so forth.

It's like we're talking about, why is this tag here?
Because some of the pages/chapters content have that tag ambience.

It's kind of the problem too....
i don't have some example. It's like you read a manga that comedy focused only, but the pacing quickly change by just one chapter, and it has romance in it or ecchi stuff in it.

It is pretty much problematic, but i give this one +1

This could honestly apply to any tag tbh. seems like the general standard is to cram every tag you possibly can for the slightest example of something. the amount of times i see "psychological" or "philisophical" for example in oneshots when they absolutely don't qualify is a good example. an ideal for me would be a genre-light and genre-focused tag for each, but that's asking for too much

I think the comedy tag should just be removed from manga that don't focus too much on comedy.
The problem is there's no way to set rules as to how tags should be used so anyone who uploads manga uses tags however they like

The problem is that some of that mangas should not be tagged as comedy. Why the fuck Kingdom, KnY, MHA, etc. are tagged as comedy?

The name holds a lot of weight. If there was a 'Gag' genre tag, or 'Hilarious' theme tag, it would be harder to misplace.

[Comedy] and [Romance] tags are some of the most misused tags in MangaDex.
I remember when series like Yamada to Sensei were tagged with [Comedy], as evidenced from the older comments,
despite containing close-to-little actual comedic moments, let alone a strong focus on humor.
In that particular case, it was finally removed and replaced with [Psychological], a much more fitting tag.

I'd like to hear other possible names for the tag though. "Gag" or "Gag Comedy" sound fine, but if there's a name that fits better, it should be used.

I don't think a manga should have to be focused on comedy to get the tag but I do think it should have a decent amount and it should be on "purpose". I have read some action that also had some comedy but wasn't the main focus. Having the comedy tag is why I will read them vs an action that doesn't. It's kind of hard to explain but to me there is humor and there is comedy. Humor is the stuff that happens in daily life or is kind of natural. Even people in bad situations might crack a joke about there situation. To me that is just part of daily life. That shouldn't get a comedy tag. Comedy to me is stepping outside of the normal daily chuckle. The scene where somebody gets mad and smacks somebody and they fly into a concrete block wall and it cracks, that is slapstick and is stepping outside.

To me tags should be to help people find and determine if they want to read a manga. I find the reverse, lack of tags, to be problematic. In the manga forum I try to help people find manga that they can't find. When I do that, unless it is one that I recognized as having been updated in the last month, this site is the last site I use to find the manga. The same is true when I am just looking for something to read to fit a mood.

@dojinshi are saying that you don't think one shots should have the philosophical tag or that some are just mislabeled.

@schlo that some are just mislabeled, obviously a oneshot can be both of those things,but ive seen a decent amount where it just clearly isn't the case
