Not as easy to spread propaganda when you give information that makes you look bad. I really don't see much of a one sided immorality here. Should have left the war-zone and not killed prisoners. Trying to be partisan also doesn't look good. This is why I didn't like history courses.

Maybe this would fly better if the Empire were to be shown more like Nazi Germany, killing minorities, or like Soviet Russia, also killing insane amounts of it's own citizens. But since the empire just seems like an ambitious country that got attacked because it was powerful, and that they've never been properly and objectively painted as a villain, they seem like the modern image of Germans. Violently logical and pragmatic. And it seems like their enemies don't like that they don't have much ground to stand on and thus are grasping at straws.

This manga is truly fantastic.

@Crombs agreed, personally really dislike all the future chapters. not only do they spoil everything to come like that the empire is going to lose but they also tell us that Tanya and all her amazing accomplishments go unrewarded and erased from history. i mean what is even the point of reading when we know it's all for naught? that the MC is doing it all for nothing...

Adorable warmonger beast loli.

Don't worry guys, even if the empire fell, I doubt Tanya would let herself sink with the ship too. Likely she went underground and started some neo-empire thing... or better yet, escaped to some neutral country to live her life in vacation.

Well that was hella biased, but also very deliberate in showing it.

Also funny that they stuck in "gave the order" when pinning stuff on MC.

Toujou Chika is just fucking crushing this adaptation. Busted out an excellent version of Guernica like it was no big deal. The character faces, the juxtaposition of goofy animal soldiers with scenes of war, the panel composition...where was Japan hiding her before this?

Tanya didn't join the military for fame, it was to get a good job, make money, live rationally, all that crap.
Besides if she really did become famous then she could eventually be assassinated for all the shit she got up to.

The retrospective chapters although not as interesting as the main story paint a near perfect picture of how history records are written, and for that alone this manga's authorship is to be commended. History is written by the victor, and one should take a step back to appreciate the historical context and the different powers' conflict of interests pertaining to any historical event, least one blindly takes sides that might not be in their best interests. There is no evil nor is there any good in this world, there are only social standards intertwined with conflicting macro interests before which a single human being is no more than a mere kog.
Does any fellow reader know of any works that depict this particular contrast between what really happened vs what has been passed down to later generations. I'll be happy with any recommendation.

@Yautja

Youjo Senki depicts the events on WWI in a semi-fantasy world. There weren't really any "good guys" or "bad guys" in WWI which is why everything (both protagonists and antagonists) are depicted in a mostly neutral light.

The series seems to be an in between point that incorporates both World Wars, since the date starts in 1923, 5 years after WW1 ended and calls the Empire, the Empire, in reference to the German Empire, not Nazi Germany, and the power of the empire, as well as the tech, more accurately reflects Nazi Germany, including terms and military structure, but anyways, not really my point. Just that it's obvious who's supposed to be who, and that they're trying to paint the Empire (Germany) in a bad light and failing. That it'd make more sense to do that if it were more like Nazi Germany and less like WW1 German Empire, or even, as I said, an ambitious and powerful, but threatening, country. So I don't see why you're correcting me. What I said isn't dependent on it being closer to WW1 or WW2.

@suo-minona There are a few isekai-esque that does it, but not in any intense detail (ie. Shikkaku Mon does it from time to time, while Sevens and Dragoon have an epilogue that is much similar to what you're looking for). There are a few chinese untranslated LN that uses it, but those are untranslated. ;p

I have mixed feelings between 'awesome' and 'horrific'.
And look who's a Lt. General after 40 years! Mr. Ugar, Tanya's former classmate lol.
