@ZestyDreamsicle Hikikomori and NEET aren't the same. The first group, usually has acute or total withdrawal from society. Including friends, often family as well, becoming what we'd call in the west "old age shut-ins." NEET are usually people who "don't give a shit" and get by in society without being in education, employment or some form of training while maintaining family and friend relationships. I think Japan classifies NEET's as fleets?fleeters? can't remember the exact term.
I've got two cousins by marriage who aren't hikikmori but simply live off family and those they help/donate time to fully even though they have no disability or social issues. They spend most of their time volunteering at temples, acting as local guides, and taking care of tourists or simple non-earning work to fill their days instead. They live well, and have zero income. One just finished traveling by foot through the back country of northern Japan, simply doing odd jobs for a meal and room at night. Nothing more, refusing money fully. I'd post their blog about it, but I don't really want people to know who I am.
