I don't get what she's thinking. Why does she think it's wrong for a baby to not cry? It's not even her own child so she's beating somebody else's baby (I don't mean to say it's okay to beat your own child either).

Generally speaking it can be a sign there's something wrong about the baby if it doesn't cry right after coming out. It could indicate a weakness of some sort. Of course it's not 100% certain, but it's quite a universally observed indicator. It also expels liquid out of the baby's lungs, mouth, and nose. In the end the ways a newborn can communicate are few, and crying is one of them.

It was a self-sacrificing technique. They tend to be strong in most fiction. Well, not only in fiction.

It's not that the monk was stronger, he clearly didn't want to harm the old man, much less have the old man sacrifice himself for those people.

I wonder if the artist is a Baki fan. Getting a big Yujiro vibe with the long red hair, general body shape & size and those shoes.

@Ovdose There's a reason the term "still-born" exists.

On another note.. What's the MC's story? We don't know anything about him.

And in over 100 chapters we haven't learned anything tangible about him.
Who was he? Who was he fighting? Why do they want him dead? How did he get so strong?
Why would a monk fight alongside evil? Was he bought?

The baby's head is literally squeezed out of the vagina. The skull is warped during this process and i imagine that it is extremely painful for everyone involved. No idea on the actual medical effects of the spanking, but if a baby is birthed and isn't crying, it's a major red flag that the baby can't breath, is unconscious, or is dying. So, the spank is a classic human behavior meant to encourage major body functions like crying. But I don't know about whether it actually has any medical benefits or drawbacks in these situations.
