Ryti was first surname that came to my mind, dunno how it would read in japanese.

Also a bit of nitpicking, Finland isn't really scandinavian (Norway, Sweden, Denmark) but nordic (Finland, Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Iceland).
FWIW I think the word in the OG title, "hokuou"/北欧, does actually specifically refer to the Nordic countries, not Scandinavia. This seems more like just the translator not knowing the difference. The Japanese wiki page for the Nordic countries uses 北欧, while the Japanese wiki page for Scandinavia uses スカンディナヴィア.

The real lore drop in this first chapter is that the heroine has good taste in Chandler. Critics say that The Long Goodbye is inferior to The Big Sleep but they’re liars. The latter is notable cuz of how influential it was—it got a goddamn Star Trek episode and is why we use it as a euphemism for death—but it’s kind of dull because you probably know a good chunk of the story by cultural osmosis.

So this might be slop but the author (probably coincidentally) gave the heroine a good taste in books, which makes it my slop

The art is stellar but I do have to wonder as to why the FMC is a foreigner in the first place? The sudden childhood friend revelation was also so fucking sudden I was wondering if I had missed a page or two...

Ah. I know this one. I'm not good at writing review so I'll just paste this one from novel update that pretty much summed up my experience.

Spoiler warning.

It was actually going pretty good until the shitty childhood friend (who is supposed to hate MC's guts at the time the story starts) decides to c*ckblock the 2 leads relationship by moving in with them a whole 2 days after her family has them move in together, to "keep an eye on them" she claims.
Apparently the author decided to drop the childhood friend's contempt to have a harem, because of f*cking course it has to be a harem. And just like the author dropped that idea, I'm dropping this god forsaken novel.
Normally I don't feel anything when one of these tr*shy wish fulfillment jp novels does this, because it advertises itself as garbage from the get go, but this one actually had a promising start, so when it devolved into this schlock, it left me supremely disappointed.

I've noticed a trend in romance manga where the main female lead is white. Do the Japanese have a caucasian fetish, like white people have an asian fetish?
Yeah and honestly I dont mind. Japan gets so much fantasized online and even real life, they should do the same thing. This is what it looks like.

My particular favorite is that one about bathing with a German girl (if you know, you know)

i think it's because in japan there aren't many colored people and romance manga is normally about normal life in highschool in japan so it isn't a fetish it's just that there aren't really colored people in high schools
For the most part no but a small growing yes.

Manga and other outlooks are generally extremely left wing of what the actual socio political landscape of Japan is, Getting married to a foreigner is still seen as alien.

Having said that you will definitely see a growing number of (usually white males) with japanese women. These are usually expats and teachers from places like the states.

It's rarer to find a Japanese man with white women but generally Japanese men are more open to dating outside their race too.

I don't know why, but this childhood friend is the type of person who will forget all the good things he did just because of one mistake he made. (In My Opinion)
