What kind of writing system does that country have? Tara learned to read and write, somewhat, in mere days, yet she can't read some ordinary words. It can't be one of the highly inefficient China style systems that take many years to learn to any tolerable level, yet it can't be like the Latin system either, where you either can read fully or can't read at all, to exaggerate a little.
