I get the twins viewpoints here. They don't trust the Duke either but it is easier to speak with him and his son because they don't expect anything from him. They want to trust their father and brothers. They want to accept that warmth and love that they clearly show them, but their prior abuse is serving as a wall. They are hyper-analyzing everything they do and say expecting that one moment where their fears will be justified and proven correct.

With the Duke and his son, they don't trust them but they don't see any reason why the Duke or his son will trick them either. They probably lived regular, non-strife filled high school lives prior to reincarnating. When they did reincarnate, they weren't raised to be made aware of the noble's usual strife and bs. They were pretty isolated from any of this so wouldn't think to look out for it. Every single person who has hated them so far has been pretty upfront about it.

The son is handsome so Arjen has her guard down, and Arien is suspicious but doesn't think much about it after realizing he could be a source of the information nobody flipping gave them until now. The Duke's father we know is sus but that is from our viewpoint as the reader's. He hasn't done anything to them. They are starting from a neutral position whereas the emperor and their brother's are starting with negative points

Second Prince literally says that the Emperor's life is up to Rurahel's whims. "But why did he sleep with Rurahel if he loved the deceased empress so much?" Gee, idk, maybe he cant afford to die yet because he's an emperor of an empire and the next in line is still just a child? Smh, stupidity continues.

Also the twin's train of thought... They can't trust the emperor despite the clear explanation but apparently trusts information from nobles, who, they said and experienced, hates bastards and half royals. /shrug

A big thing people are forgetting in this story is the royal family heal stupidly fast. The emperer cutting himself isnt an issue, theres no way the mother could kill/harm him and even if she couldnt heal him he would have healed in an hour or so.

Also the whole age thing, teenagers are not smart or mentaly stable. They make alot of mistakes and even more bad judgements. Its never mentioned that the twins were smart or gifted, if anything theyre at best average. Then you take those teenaged minds and throw 5 years of starvation and both mental and physical abuse on top? If any thing the twins seem really capable for whats happend to them.

Yes misunderstandings are a boring and over used story method, but stop blaming the twins for not noticing it. How would they realise this is a misunderstanding? almost all their actions are justified save the run away one, that they stopped after realising it was stupid.

So to summarize, the Emperor is a moron who will cut his hand and trust just any ol' stranger that comes up to him saying they are a healer. Not only that, but the only "guard" he had was his 50+ year old nanny/maid. It's amazing that an assassin hasn't killed him already. You would think his guardian, or anyone really, would have at least warned him "hey dude, you might want to have someone who isn't the emperor be the guinea pig for this one. Just saying."
