We don't have the usual benefit of seeing his Thought Bubbles like a normal herbivore MC but I think they're doing a good job of making him a good boyfriend. You can imagine what he's thinking by his expressions, having her outline silhouetted in his eyes was nice way to show he was captivated.

It's tough because if you showed his perspective and thoughts, all her self doubt about her weight would become dramatic irony.

That's a fair point to an extent, but a visual medium can show without telling, and dramatic irony is fun anyway.
