If that was true (which it was for women back in the day, same for the men, but it wasn't that severe, and same can be said for those living in the middle east and in other countries), then in today's standards, everyone will be punished for their adultery, since relationships in modern times is more free and relaxed, than times of the past were. People will cheat and/or fall out of love, so it's best to not let it be a crime, since that is not something that would be against another person's rights, it's only a crime on morals which everyone's morals are different. But today's laws help in settling matters between couples that are married and if not married, but feel like you wasted your time on the relationship, you can always sue, that is another way to settle things. Or another way is learning from the experience and moving on from your life, not looking back and being bitter on the past.
