@LaDeeDah I feel like rather than love it was stockholm syndrome. He had lost everything he worked for and cared for and was forced into the harem. Getting rid of rivals and maintaining the Emperors favor was for survival. He thought he had a place by the Emperors side and was needed, it was how he rationalized being a hostage. It's also probably why he was the only survivor in the original story line, he was smart and had a survive at all costs mentality. When he gain his freedom and old position it must have felt like a life sentenced prisoner getting a sudden pardon.
@Mojo That makes sense. I remember the MC saying that in the OG story, he was the only one who stayed with the emperor as he was dying, so that kinda gave the impression that there were at least some genuine feelings involved (at least in the original). But stockholm syndrome playing a part does make sense
