I gotta say, I really fucking hate this type of MC. Like, the type where he's ostensibly a lazy/dull/non-descript background character, but actually secretly super hot, fit and awesome at everything, but then still despite that he's super dense and finds it absolutely unthinkable that anyone would like him.
An MC who has flaws, like being shy, lazy, unpopular, lack social skills or have hobbies that fall outside of the norm has the advantage of making them relatable to readers who are, y'know, normal people with their own flaws. But if you make all of that just a facade, it loses all relatability. I guess it's supposed to be entertaining when other people underestimate him and are then shocked when they find out his true abilities, but there's usually no good justification for why the MC would hide their abilities, so it just feels like a dumb obvious plot device to me. He's also not just like, secretly good at something, he's secretly a perfect infallible Gary Stu who has no flaws whatsoever, so he becomes completely boring and one-dimensional.
And this makes it even more infuriating when he's also completely dense and cannot comprehend that the female lead is in love with him. He's super smart, good-looking, fit and talented at everything, so how come his brain stops functioning on this one point? The signs are super obvious to anybody, it's completely reasonable for anyone to fall in love with him given his ridiculously high specs, and he's shown to be totally socially competent and empathetic in every other situation, and in this novel in particular he's even privy to her private thoughts (expressed in Russian, which she thinks he doesn't understand) and he STILL doesn't get it (his childhood friend gets it right away though). It completely defies logic and reason and it's totally obvious that it's just because the author wants to drag the romance out, but can't come up with a plausible way to make it happen other than to make the MC selectively retarded.
