I need to understand why Rom-com MCs have to be at the literal bottom of the hierarchy. Can't they make them atleast Average? How am I supposed to find a character likeable who doesn't even like himself? If they hate themselves so much, why not put even a least bit of effort? But at the very least he doesn't seem like the NPC kind so that's fine. Hope we some kind of character development on his part.

Basic storytelling. The lower the hero is on the bottom, the more fulfilling his hero's journey will be.

I am more whole legs guy, but thick thighs are generally required for them legs to be godly. There is a bunch of positions when you can do a proper deed, and still be able to worship them thighs/legs so there is a chance for mah dood

Japanese society encourages keeping your head down, not standing out. If you aren't one of the few glamorous elite then you're bottom of the barrel with everyone else. So many gals and gyaru's in anime/manga, if you actually showed up to school with different colored hair your ass is getting suspended.

I loved polar opposites, but it feels a little rude to compare. That's one where the story is them dating and experiencing everything that comes with it. There's plenty of similar stories where the dating is the story instead of the teased romance.
