Naah, this seems like a pretty reasonable progression to me - this has always been about their lizard brains going "that's so hotttt" while their forebrains have been going "uhhhh . . . what I do?", the only thing that's changed over the course of the series is how long they can stay on their feet before they trip over themselves and fall flat on their faces.

They've now reached a point where they're kind of almost if you squint right normal-ish friends (though only just, and they still don't actaully know each other very well) - exchanging text messages is a normal progression from there, except Eguchi is kind of weird about that so a phone call is a sensible fallback option. And hey, video calls sound fun! And ooh, a video call in the evening before bed - that'd be great! (says lizard brain, while smooth-as forebrain goes "uhhhh . . . . You think so? I guess . . . .") Oh, better make sure I look good! (says lizard brain, while forebrain goes ". . . . wat?") Mm, shower nice, better make sure I smell good! (says lizard brain, while forebrain goes "wait a minute, what the hell are you doing?!") And so on - each step is a logical progression (if you apply the right mix of hornilogic and one-upmanship), just like all the previous progressions have been logical; each step makes sense given the previous one, right up to the point where they trip up and the house of cards they built collapses and everyone melts from embarrassment.

Also, I think it's a bit of a stretch to say the point of the series is flirtatious comedy, they've already basically engaged in (accidental) mutual masturbation in a semi-public space, and come damned close to (accidentally) repeating that experience at least one other time - at least this time they seem to be trying, any accidents are going to be because lizard brain is in the drivers' seat and everyone else is just screaming and flailing like maniacs . . . .
