So Yakishio isn't his friend? That's gotta suck considering he seems to be the one that actually cares about her.
Reminder that we're only seeing his side of things on this subject and he basically has no memories of their shared time as middle-school seatmates -- or memories of middle school in general, outside of cram school.

Kazuhiko is an unreliable narrator when it comes to defining his relationships with those closest to him due somewhat to his low self-esteem exacerbating his difficulties understanding social cues, somewhat to his mild tsundere tendencies causing him to consciously refuse to admit he understands situations better than he lets on and, in certain contexts, somewhat to him carrying issues the story will start alluding to eventually but not quite actually reveal (to date, anyway l.

Just blitzed through all the chapters in one go. Absolutely lovely. Thank you @Nyanu and the rest of the Cafe for translating this!

Given how much the anime rushed this arc in particular, I'm fine with the manga pacing.
Which is weird, since I actually feel like it took its time with this part of the narrative and made things flow more naturally. The manga jumps and skips around a lot, from my perspective, which is jarring to me, while the anime felt like it maintained a better continuity in just about every instance. The times where I've felt I learned something genuinely new about the events of the story while reading this has been few and far between, as well. I was kinda hoping for more, but it really has been kinda just a rehash of what I know from the anime, and especially the first volume felt like a jumbled and barely-cobbled-together mess compared to the first episode or two.
