I love gift registries. They have saved me from being the one that just gives gift cards for family and colleague life events. Luckily most of my nieces and nephews are easy to shop for, they specifically ask for Amazon gift cards or KU gift certs.

Amazon gift card is probably the most lazy option one could possibly choose, seeing how it's bought online and you can get everything from Amazon, from candies to jet engines, so it doesn't really send any kind of message. But if you go to a dedicated baby/children equipment store and get a gift card from there, then the recipient of the gift card is limited to buying baby/children stuff because the store doesn't sell anything else. Of course it's still worse than actually buying a specific item that happens to be exactly what the recipient needs and wants, but that can be difficult and the chances of getting something that only ends up collecting dust are high.
