The punishment is probably worse, but they don't want to go into too much detail because it's a light hearted novel. Like based on their condition and clothes and chains, also the fact there are other people in line with them, they probably are being shipped off to be sold as slaves...and since all of them are old dudes they will probably just waste away at the slave trader's.
