If I'm not mistaken, spell cards are used exclusively to solve "incidents". Most events in mangas do not qualify for it, and the few that does are skipped to the aftermath.Have spell cards even been depicted in an official manga since Silent Sinner in Blue?
That's more or less what I figured too. But considering how Yamame and Parsee approached Reimu here, the scenario really feels like they should be fighting with spell cards, at least initially. If I'm not mistaken, spell cards are used exclusively to solve "incidents". Now in the case of the jailbreak king, it's hard to tell if it qualify as an incident or not, as I'm not sure if peoples are aiming to exterminate her or "exterminate" her...
The way characters have been fighting in this manga certainly got me intrigued : despite looking notably more violent than typical depiction, it kinda follow the essential spirit of spellcard rule, which is :That's more or less what I figured too. But man, I really just can't process spell card duels as the "gameplay-in-lore" part of Touhou.
Aside from Silent Sinner in Blue, there only are a couple of detailed writings about it beyond Perfect Memento in Strict Sense. And even still, Grimoire of Marisa and Grimoire of Usami are just commentaries for the patterns, not the system itself. They hardly paint a picture to imagine what exactly even goes on in a spell card duel...
I came here to suggest that, would be suitably goofy.Did those two... miss each other?
This Manga isn't helping dispel the theory that Reimu has split personalities.THE CRIMSON SLASHER HAS AWAKENED
Er... No. Flandre stabbing Satori in the heart was clearly with intent to severely hurt / kill. This is proven by pretty much everything afterwards saying that she could've died. Especially when Flandre says "you can't kill a youkai that easily" - signifying that she had an intent to kill (she's a kind of demon, what do you expect lol). I'm also very well aware that, for example, Sakuya uses knives as bullets and they could be lethal as well but clearly used in a non-lethal way. Context is key.The way characters have been fighting in this manga certainly got me intrigued : despite looking notably more violent than typical depiction, it kinda follow the essential spirit of spellcard rule, which is :
1. non-lethal
2. represent the user on how they wish to be percieved (especially important for a youkai).
I'm starting to wonder if this is a case of the Reimu Syndrome, where each manga has a different depiction of her.
See also forbidden scrollery. When things get serious, Reimu does too. This isn't new.Er... No. Flandre stabbing Satori in the heart was clearly with intent to severely hurt / kill. As for the Reimu Syndrome, that's also a "no" in my book. She's just in "I'm doing my job, seriously" mode. There's multiple sides to somebody: she can be lazy, plotting, greedy but also welcoming, easy-going, naive, etc. Before she decided to go directly to Mizuchi a few chapters back, she was still doing her job as a shrine maiden but in a lazy way, following the others lead and being scared in general. When she saw her and discovered her name, it just clicked - like when an incident rear its head and her intuition say "hey something's up".
Feel free to disagree but I don't think that it neither shows danmaku (and its rules) or the so-called "Reimu Syndrome".

Remember that the fighting games exist and were also over incidents. There were Spell Cards used but there was also a lot of violent ass kicking and body launching in the interim. The manga depictions are less the formal schmup sense like the mainline games and are basically as we see them duke it out in the fighting games. That's more or less what I figured too. My stance at this point is that I run by the vagueness of the fact the draft to the spell card rules is just that – a rejected draft. The real spell card duels pretty much boil down to fighting until the other side gives up – and "spell cards" is simply an informal categorization of attack patterns.Remember that the fighting games exist and were also over incidents.
