It's not that I can't understand the need to defend against a threat, only that despite being caught mostly unaware they were able to hurt the dragon twice before it responded. And now that it's starting to respond, they are going to hide in a cave rather then taking advantage of the relitively stationary target.

Seriously, it would have been the perfect moment to interrupt the breath attack with another boulder to the face or just straight up decapitated by the boys sword wave attack. So other then extending the fight sequence, why would they bother hiding in a cave?
