I like this plot progression, but I can't shake the feeling that there were missed opportunities here. A more devious and unique assassination attempt that circumvents the power level would have been interesting to see.

They thought cross had some pretty high level adventurers supporting and training him. But they had no idea his Teachers were (probably) the 3 strongest people in the world. It’s like picking a fight with a dude despite knowing he’s got a pretty tough big brother and then finding out the bro is a marine who’s committed countless war crimes

It is not really an assassin unit in that case, is it? In what way are "emergency bodyguards" considered assassins? Why even train them as assassins and so they are only reasonable to give bodyguard-duties if you really have to, instead of training them as bodyguards so they can always be used, even when there is not an emergency that necessitates subpar bodyguards?
