Tanya the Evil LN shows the big picture. While Tanya and her elite squad do well, you do see the effects of war as it drags on. But I'll have to explain a bit:

• Original title is Youjou Senki aka "YS" translated as Young Girl's Military Chronicle
• YS LN is quite different from the manga and the anime.
• Main character of YS isn't Tanya, but rather "War". Tanya is just the main viewpoint for viewing war.
• YS isn't "War is Bad" rather it's "Mechanics of War" at mid to high level. Some strategy, logistics, military decisions, politics, spying, negotiation, etc.

The fact that Tanya isn't the MC and the story is more about mechanics of war is exactly the the reason I never could get into the light novel.
The whole talk about logistics and politics was kinda boring and difficult to read for me. It's only for a very niche audience.

I was positively surprised how much more interesting the anime was.

Which is more cruel for a human to do? Watch him/her patient die one by one at his/her side, or abandon your comrade on the battlefield to survive?

Both are very hard decisions that I don't wish on anyone. This is why war is hell, y'know.
