They are fighting for old man / oligarchs /persons with high status personal interest. The main theme of this story is about that, the fact that the war started then so many lives gone and escalating is because of that. The fact that the war ends so easily because touri, sylph, and others personal interest (to end the war) when they become someone that have high status. Well sylph personal interest at this point is still naive which is to gain attention from her father

There's little to no difference between in the main story between the WN and LN. The only difference is there's a sequel story that gets a chapter or two added in the LN every volume. The translator for the WN has also been releasing translations for those.

And yes the manga will likely take over 10 years. This is still arc 1 out of 10 volumes, 11+ if counting the sequel. This arc is just the prologue, so while it is trying to worldbuild the setting, etc it's only the start. characters are still being introduced like the antagonist just got introduced this chapter.

This chapter revealed that the people of Sabbath are actually against the war. How exactly are the people on the top able to get people to join the slaughter in trench warfare for 10 years straight without much results? The Russian Empire only lasted 3 years before the people had enough and revolted.

Touri, along with a squad did a suicide run. The mission is crucial for Austin Army to survive. They know they're going to die. So Touri, badly wounded finds her lover, which also was fatally wounded. So she make a confession and they married there. There are underlying reason that she confess but she also faithful to her lover.
Touri survive all of that after is a miracle.

I'm guessing that the Austin Empire was losing the war for things to get that bad in the end. I'm also guessing that it's probably like how the The Empire in Youjo Senki was simply overwhelmed by everyone ganging up on them.

People love making money, and politicians love to make a name for themselves in history. They don't know any of those people that are fighting and dying on the front lines, so why should they even care about them? Do you care about the life of some mosquito that you kill? That's how those people view everyone. We're nothing but bugs or cattle to them.
