Machino is a clever girl, but she likes Nitanda. Another girl doing her gimmick with the boy she likes will make her feel insecure and jealous. It's irrational emotional response that is completely normal.

I have to remind myself that, because Nitanda is the lens through which we experience the story and he has a super slanted view of Machino, her behavior relying on the subtext of inference on the part of the reader means that she's not being petulant as it might first appear when she belittles him in situations like this.

I think it would read very differently if we had perspectives from more than just the one kid who sits alone in a room all day and relies on the rest of the cast to come to him. So it's a good move on the part of the author in presenting everything through only Nitanda's perception of events, because it forces more thoughtful engagement to get past the surface level of appearances.

Only sticking point is I would imagine she could control the barbed comments she points directly at him, especially as this isn't the first time she's said something that could easily be construed as mean-spirited or even a put-down, when he's objectively done nothing wrong.

But I see it more as an example of the ongoing trend of female leads belittling the male lead in a way that's meant to be endearing or even outright attractive for the reader, so "whatever gets your engine going", I guess is the intent.

I think she got a bit jealous because she saw Arakune was about to join the club, and then it might end up with both her (Machino) and Nitanda not having enough time to talk before her club anymore, and deep down, she doesn't like it.
