it's been a while since they talked about it but the main issue is that her father is a giga misogynist, she was a tomboy before high school because her father hater her being/acting girly

actually I just looked at the chapter where she talks about it and she did the whole boy act in middle school as a way to get back at her father, not to appease him, but then realized it was kinda dumb and stopped in high school
