before Bakufuu tearing the short distance courses in Japan, there are no separation between Sprint and Mile race, they are classified as Short disciplines. Sakura Bakushin O only lose once on 1400m or shorter distance in his first Sprinters Stakes against Nishino Flower. North Flight on the other hand won all the races between 1600-1800m distances at the time.

This Mile Championship is the retirement for Flight. Both Bakushin and Flight trainers once discussed on them having children at that Mile Championship, which is very curious but stopped by the owner for fear the children will be too specialised on short distances.

Anyway, because these couples tearing the tracks of sprint for Bakushin and Mile for Flight, not letting each other win in their preferred distance, JRA eventually added more sprint and mile races. Bakushin actually has gotten a bit more stamina to run in Mile race properly, it’s just because Flight keeps winning even with Bakushin sometimes getting 2nd place in the same race.

I think this is more about desperate shipping goggles than any real intention. Especially after the recent game event that popularized the ship. I mean, this is a typical development for fateful rivals in spokon manga/anime.
