Who said it's getting supernatural? All of this could be about some super secret information being passed on through generations that lets them blackmail powerful people or similar. Nothing really says "strongest ninja = strongest fighter."

I get the feeling that this is a plot twist that's gonna get uno reverse plot twisted... then we'll realize it was just a ruse for the next plot twist... which will come with more unexpected developments.
