After looking up that term, I've given it some thought, and my theory about why that effect may have some foundation in truth (I mean, I could just read the wikipedia article, but don't have time for that) is that we need to project a bit of our desires onto a person, they have to be in our minds something we shape them out to be rather than who they actually are, and when you know someone from a very young age, you really know them at such an intimate level from the get-go that it is hard to project anything onto them that you don't already fundamentally know about them. A certain mystery so you can fill in the blank.
That being said, I often root for the childhood friend ship (not friendship) in anime.
