That was the case for Shuuichi Hoshina, but it could be different for other criminals for all we know.
mhm, I ended up cutting it from my comment because it was getting too long, but there does seem to be an element of if you're penitent and you're forgiven you can just eventually walk to the end and get out. it's just that the worse your curse, and thus your actions the longer you'll be stuck there, the longer the walk becomes until it ends up practically endless.

This is one of the more reasonable “grey phenomenon”, only those who “sinned” (and then cursed), got screwed.
So it’s relative to their past actions, unlike the usual that can be either indiscriminate and/or unreasonable.

For a mostly normal person, it’s a walk to the shrine where they get to ponder upon things that weighed on them, kind of like some sort of therapy I guess.

Next time I'm feeling bad for not doing enough cardio I'm just gonna remind myself that when I die I'll be walking forever in purgatory.

This is up there as one of my favorite grey jobs in this series: amazing existential horror vibes, the details of exactly what's going on are inscrutable, but the broad strokes of what's happening are easy to follow. Top shelf stuff. Also: RED

I do wonder why the gods stink and tho it's obvious why the criminal is blind in one eye, not sure why the sister and uncle can't hear or speak

Honestly a nice conclusion to the initial mystery, and one of the few gray jobs that has a relatively nice end (except for the criminal).

Reminds me of the job involving the guy trying to switch bodies with a baby, that story also ended up with a good ending and punished a criminal.

It isn't the god who stinks but the thing invited into the path to the shrine to punish the wicked. The god resides in the shrine and when everyone got there the shrine didn't stink.

The curse hit all three of them. The uncle was punished because he didn't speak out, the sister because she didn't hear the boy out and lost him.

4 chapters in one update? You're pampering us way too much, Ura Baiters! Jokes aside, I agree with what the others said, this job definitely has one of the most satisfying conclusion in the series in the sense that it doesn't indiscriminately target people, only those who deserve it. It's the last thing I would expect out of a Kuroiwa case. Also the random flashback in the previous chapter suddenly making complete sense in this one, that part was masterfully done too.

Man, so sad! I feel so bad for Kouta's sister and uncle. Really, they curse themselves with guilt but he holds nothing against them. I just reread it 3 times to really enjoy the ambiance and the guilt. Even the defects Kouta's family faked make sense. Kouta's sister didn't hear anything when she left him and his uncle didn't say anything when he saw him.
