It isn't the god who stinks but the thing invited into the path to the shrine to punish the wicked. The god resides in the shrine and when everyone got there the shrine didn't stink.

The curse hit all three of them. The uncle was punished because he didn't speak out, the sister because she didn't hear the boy out and lost him.
After rereading it, I don't think uncle and sister were cursed. She said she's "sorry for lying" so they probably pretended to be cursed so they could go through the pilgrimage with the suspected criminal.

reminds me of these lyrics from a doujin song:

Know, that for one to consider deeds as the proof of one’s past lives;
One must know that it is most desirable to commit virtue in the next.
And your path in said life,
May be of one treading upon an unforgiving desolation,
May be of one forseeking upon an untrodden wasteland,
May be of one struggling to live in an unending vastness,
Indeed, that is your sins manifested.

Whew. Call that a proper barnstormer. The sense of tone and mood in this.... truly terrifying. I really love the use of... almost photocopied photos of faces, kind of elements. I also enjoy that our gals seem to still 'be with him' as he walks, and we then learn you can only do this job once.

Whatever copy of the gals, or form taken of them... you probably don't want to do that often.

Truly enjoyed the use of the "Red" effect turning into that black-red sky.

Really nice presentation throughout this story; definitely one of the creepier ones, visually.

They said the path to the shrine was through an airport, and I guess there's nothing really more to it than that.
I think it's also a warning that the visitors may have a long journey to go on. I doubt much in Urabaito is actually nothing.

Good pay too, probably the best one yet for them
Probably because there are higher requirements for reliability.

Not the kinda gray job where you can just throw people at it without caring whether they can follow instructions.
