Yeah that's kinda what I was thinking. Either there is no smell because there's no actual danger, or something is blocking her ability. If something is blocking her ability, it's likely related to the little ritual they did when they started, and also related to the way everyone pretends nothing is wrong. I also think Akari is sketchy, since she's trying to get them to stay.

not to be That Guy, but it reminds me of an SCP where a 'thing' will manifest right outside a closed space, and terrify the person in question so much they wind up starving to death in the room.

I love how many questions this story brings us! Every single new issue just comes with such mystery~ I love how this one is playing out. I ALSO love how it's subverting that classic j-horror trope of "just ignore the horror, ignore your curiosity, pretend like nothing is wrong, and everything will be okay..." this is also societal commentary, in its own way.
