Not only by giving her stuff but by actually influencing her, like when the sister talks about the cake being an anniversary of her ex's death, Onryo is smiling in the background with a distinct aura around her. Before that when she gave her the knife, Onryo is clearly whispering into her ear and it begins having an effect on her. So this was likely just Onryo being an Onryo for a change.
