I don't know if I'll work on more of this series. The Kansai-ben is one thing; the irritating number of SFX (my least favourite thing to deal with) is another.

It's a weird little manga, though. It's a cooking manga where the cooking is "what can I put in the microwave or get on discount". It's a family drama where the family is a father and son but the art is distractingly gay-coded when the dialogue is not. What is it? Later chapters are either slice of life or going into the story behind this unconventional family unit, but it still seems like an odd thing to be running in a shounen manga magazine.

Really nice art, though.

Are you sure this is Shounen? or some gay shounen offshoot?
Totally shounen. Runs in Gessan (Monthly Shounen Sunday).

Gay content is obviously something that should be able to run successfully in shounen/seinen magazines, since they're primarily targeted at male audiences - indeed, another series I'm working on at the moment, the excellent Katasumi no Kioku, is running in Morning Two, and that's a genuinely gay story. What makes this series odd for me isn't the gay coding of its artwork on its own - lots of manga pander in this way for a number of different audiences - but the fact that it chooses to do so in a story about a father and son.

I'm not really spoiling things much by saying they're not actually father and son, it'll turn out in a few chapters' time, but still.

Just cause the art resembles a lot of BL art, doesn't mean it will end up like that. For example, this series has art that would have you scream hentai, or at the very least ecchi, especially with it's current vol 3 cover art. So far? not one panty shot. Was so fcking happy.

This? Just a kid happy to see his dad so far. Ignore the art and don't let a potential usagi drop your mood into assumptions, especially with the group leader's earlier message confirming it's slice of life in a shonen manga. Feels like Yugami-kun ni wa Tomodachi ga Inai and I'm all for it

lotta yuri series are like this… not romantic or sexual but they have a “special relationship” with fan service thrown in

Wait, what?????
Spoilers:

Towa is Takaaki's nephew. Towa's mother , a famous actress, had a relationship with Takaaki's brother and then abandoned the child to Takaaki to raise. However, Towa doesn't know this, so much of the ongoing plot is about Takaaki's dilemma over revealing this to him and Sayuri's (the mother's) involvement in their lives.

It's not just the art that piques me (though I accept that this is probably not going to turn into gay porn). It's also the little story bits like Towa refusing to associate with girls multiple times, specifically winning a crange game prize for his dad, being very excited to see him, and walking in on him shirtless. I know this isn't BL, but I'm willing to bet the Mangaka has created their fair share of it in the past.

I remember when I used to read shoujo manga, I could tell from the art that the author or artist drew primarily BL stuff haha. This seems to be a case of sorts. The dad's pointy chin and the kid's feminine features were the dead giveaways for me

Well, Japanese BL has been historically targeted to the female audience as well as written primarily by female mangaka....

I'm well aware. I'm also well aware of the current push by many manga editors/publishers to encourage women to publish in shounen/seinen magazines for a broader audience, particularly since men won't read shoujo/josei magazines. Gessan does have a wider range of styles and titles than many shounen magazines, so this series isn't out of place here in that regard (and all of the mangaka's previous works, save Villain Actor which she only did scripts for, have run in Gessan), but this kind of fanservice - if that's the intention - is still something unusual for the nominal target audience, and even more so because it's in a narrative about family.

The modern day dweeb trying to not Gayfy every normal relationship: Impossible.
Man I don't know how long you've been reading manga or what genres you've branched out into, but absolutely everything about this story and it's art scream yaoi. The art and the scenario are straight out of an early 2000's yaoi doujin, and it's not trying to be subtle at all about it.

My preference when reading thing is that.

I DON'T JUMP CONCLUSION

I will give out assumption and guess base on what I understand, but I do not believe them as conclusive till they are confirmed.

Because I prefer when they truly confirmed and out in the open and not hint or wink wink stuff.

Because all of those over my time reading are used as ammo in people headcannon in the never ending naval warfare call Ship War.

I was like, odd, that doesn't seem like a comment I made. I went back up and checked, and it wasn't. How'd you quote me with the wrong copy? haha xD

Didn't expect that to happen.

Something probably wrong with the reply button.
