Using pngquant to optimize image sizes

In case if storage/bandwidth is a bottleneck for mangadex servers did you consider applying https://pngquant.org/ compression to the images? This may reduce their size by 50-75% w/o any visible impact.

@need4spam
discussed before here: https://mangadex.org/thread/175032

Since that discussion I found: https://css-ig.net/pingo. Does a better job on PNG graphics. There is a GUI for running it. The author is a bit of an idiot. Some bugs (in GUI), and requires the sendto: right click to use and change the INI file that is used (read the comment section @site). Or you have to use drag and drop and reset values all the time.

For JPG types use nxpower lite desktop v8. It's a pay program but a google search can fix that. MAKE SURE TO DELETE THE PNG reduction program. nxpower lite is just another GUI program using shell out programs. It will then error on PNG types but it won't croak.

There you have it. And mangadex I don't foresee using reduction programs to save space. Any of the major scanlation groups already reduce prior to posting. I never see large reductions on mangadex, just sometimes.

@need4spam @doppler Storage/bandwidth isn't a bottleneck for us at all really. Total site storage is only like 9 Tb and because our image server traffic is cached by our CDN (Path), they're basically taking the brunt of it (over 1 Pb a month)

Image size is only a concern for... users, I guess, who don't need to be loading massive 10 mb PNG covers while reading manga on their phone. We'll probably have a dedicated image server for lower size images in the future

I never advocated for Mangdex to change anything. I have only advocated to get users to donate something to keep things rolling. You have some real kick-ass programmers (@Teasday) who keep things running. It's up to your group to decide if an alternate chapter page is used for mobile users. I can see MB's be a problem for some people. I don't even have a data plan on my smartphone. It's only a problem when I am out of WIFI range somewhere. Where I live and work that's kind of hard to happen.

@doppler It wouldn't be something we forced on mobile users, it would be an optional choice for anyone on bad internet
