Interesting that the tanuki isn't completely childlike and conceptually understands death. It's not that she didn't understand that taking the place of a dead child was bad, she just didn't understand that the child in the picture was dead. She probably would never have done it if she had known about how humans honor their lost loved ones.

She doesn't think much or at all of humans initially. She's starting to get to know them. She's essentially just a child, like Yuzu was.

I wonder why the couple doesn't have more children than the dead one. Although it's not like it would have been stated they haven't tried. Or maybe Yuzu's birth was exceptionally difficult and dangerous. Maybe she died due to genetic issues, and they won't dare to try again, fearing the same end result.

Yuzu-Tanuki is Yuzu-Tanuki, not Yuzu, she must build a life with her new parents
