Its probably another bot.
Obviously the framing is all sinister here, but I can also imagine some sort of "priest bot" or for that matter a priest cyborg that helped bring people comfort. Author might have some deeper plot point in mind but could also be playing with our expectations a bit, and it's just something simple and decent but left alone for a very long time now. This sequence reminds me a bit of an old post-apoc web comic called "Stand Still Stay Silent" with a similar arc, albeit more on the fantasy then technological side of things.
Thanks a lot for giving us two chapters in such a short time frame!
100%, great series and I too appreciate the quick two!

Well, despite the post-apocalyptic setting, the author paints a somewhat "positive" (or maybe "hopefull" would be the better word) outlook on the world. So far, he hasn't made the characters truly suffer and this is part of the charm of the series. So, while i normally enjoy redemption/development through blood, sweat and tears a lot, i would be also quite happy if he keeps up the somewhat lighthearted tone he had until now and the eyes belong to something akin to the librarian bot.

on my 2nd read through, what's striking is how lightly they're packing, if at all. like their journeys are wandering down an empty aisle in a supermarket at 2am. not even for the sake of psychological security would they keep a full bag - to me, that's like a different species of human. the city is everything and the city is kind.
