Mai was overbearing from the first chapters, just going after MC even though she said from the start that she wants their relationship to be purely friends
And Ajisai is actually the one MC loved being around from her first appearance and never did anything wrong for MC

So I really have no fucking idea how MC treats Mai the same as Ajisai
Why is there even a question of "Ajisai or Mai?"

She has always been self-conscious and hated herself. That's the whole premise of this. She was what she felt like was a "loser" when this series started. She decided to reinvent herself in high school and had personal struggles trying to fit in and socialize against who she really is (the first chapters are all about how she's mentally drained constantly pretending to be extroverted). She's, from the start, been lying about herself and her personality, her insecurities, etc. She's friends with some of the most popular people in school while pretending to be just like them. If I remember right, there was a chapter where some of the less popular girls were talking about something she wanted to join in on, or wanted to befriend them, but they brought up how she was in a different league than them.

Cap that off with two of said popular girls confessing to her, the girl who is FAKING EVERYTHING ABOUT HERSELF, and you can easily see where her issues are.
