@iamrangerbob I may be misremembering, but I'm pretty sure the first time we as readers ever saw him kn screen was after they had been dating for a while. So him being pushy should be read in the context of them having been in a serious relationship, at the very least serious enough for him to be proposing and for the people around him to not think that it was way too early. So us as readers may see him as desperate, but it makes more sense when you actually look at the situation. Of course, I may be misremembering.
@yolia I completely admit to not rereading and may be misremembering, but that was the point. They were not "just going on dates". I think they were dating rather seriously when he proposed to her, hence the fact that he did propose to her. She definitely was never his fiancée, but their relationship wasn't casual. Her straight ghosting if him afterwards was extremely rude, at the very least. If I'm not remembering correctly, then I retract my statements.
@princess_daphie Saying "as long as there's no abuse" kind of really...misses the point. An adult almost always comes from a position of power in a relationship with a child. That's not just a general truth. That's a specific truth here. Mashuu was borderline a victim of child neglect by his father. Literally the entire reason Satoko came into his life was because of this fact. Even though Mashuu is now older and in a better home environment, his feelings for her are clearly based on these memories of her as his savior. The end result is that Satoko's statement of wanting to meet him on equal terms is supposed to be a very big deal because they're not equals. Maybe they could be, but there are HUGE obstacles to that goal.
One thing in this chapter that really annoyed me was the not-lawyer sister's boyfriend (I'm bad with names) saying that Mashuu was with Satoko of his own free will. Uh...really? You're going to talk about the free will of a child in what was basically a neglected household and his free will in going to a random adult? I said before that I don't know Japanese child welfare law, but holy crap on a stick, if that's how the legal system works, that's horrible. And not like a teenager or something. I can't recall Mashuu's age at the time, but I think he was seven? That part was really messed up to look at.
