But Hime... - she's just...shallow, but like conceptually. We know she's fake to everyone
See, this is the one thing I'm fairly confident we actually do know about Hime—that she's not actually shallow. At least, not in the way that she thinks of herself as.

We're told time and time again that Hime's personality is one big act. That she's a manipulative liar who only acts like a goody-two-shoes to get what she wants. This is what Hime tells Kanoko and Yano, and how she thinks of herself.

But in all of the instances where we've seen Hime open up, express herself, and enact her own agency, she's always proven herself to be a kind, caring person, who values the people around her. Hime's "act" isn't some mask that hides the ugliness deep inside her. Hime really is a sweet and caring girl, and the way she acts around others really is her "true" self. She just puts more energy into it, and sands off the edges, taking care not to show too much individuality to the point where she would cause a clash of opinions, out of an obvious fear of rejection. Hime thinks that if she fully expressed herself around others, they would begin to dislike her.

The thing we don't know about Hime is why she thinks this way. When did she start to believe that she was fundamentally unlikable? The manga hints at there being a reason, something that shaped the way Hime thinks, but we're still left in the dark up to this point of what's really going on inside her head.
