@viewtiful

I understand you have your own opinion but please try no to be political.
Anyway, physical touch between teacher and students were not entirely forbidden, however touching should be a done in necessary oly, like in PE, help them when in medical needs or apprehended them (if they did something harmful). So physically touching students without necessary can be considered sexual harassment just like he said at Ch1. What he did right now is wrong, this why he upset so much, that he realizes the things he did just now was nothing but give him akin a drugs and made him addicted to it.
Morally speaking is not wrong to help someone in need especially dealing with depression however as in the chapter said "choose who get hug is terrible decisions and hypocrite" since modern teacher is supposed to be equally treat all of their students.

I'm curious how he will resolve this problem, because there's few limited options. Either continue help him or cut ties with him to keep it professional. Of course by any chance he, the student, realizes that he can solve his problem and moves on.

@Straborvsky I am not sure how my comment was political, but I apologize if it seemed that way.
I was simply stating that as a korean who have someone with mental illness in the family.

Is this one of those "Give a man a fish..." kind of situations

Sometimes, it's better to just give a fish rather than teach fishing...I wish.

You know, after reading/watching the "Silent Voice" manga/film, I've became convinced that this whole "treating students equally" is just idiocy beyond a certain point. Yes, a teacher should not have favorites (or the opposite). But his primary goal, as also mentioned in this chapter, is to teach - and since different people are good at different things, some students will require more effort or a different approach for certain subjects. He actually has to treat his students differently if he wants to do his job right.

You know, it really HURTS when we can't help students, but we can't help everyone.
I'm a teacher, so this chapter is painful for me.

@viewtiful you have no need to apologize. What you said was not political. It was just an observation of one culture and another. The other guy was just reading too deep into your comment.

Our Ethics teacher gave a talk describing the boundaries of teachers and students.
That though he may act friendly or joke around, or even give us life advice, he isn’t our friend. And that’s fine. His job is to teach, and ours is to learn.
Mind you he wasn’t strict. Probably the most laid back person I’ve met.
Anw, I think drawing the line first is important. More-so respecting said line.

Don't know if someone mentioned it: but shoutout to page 26, seems like a scar?

@pip25:
I agree, but the example shown in the chapter was clearly way above Takayanagi's pay grade. It's unreasonable to expect teachers to cater to every student - especially those with special needs - when they aren't given the proper training for it. As a teacher of course I would like to help all my students, but since I'm not trained properly for it I run the risk of making things worse despite my good intentions.

... And that is provided that I am even aware of each of my students' special needs. Take our university, example; we're recognized globally as an inclusive university but because of confidentiality issues students and their parents are under no obligation to divulge information such as special needs. The result is us teachers are left to discover things on our own, and there are times when it is already too late.

SAME LMAO. I'm both happy and pained we got our wish so quickly now.

This chapter...hurts, painfully real, but I'm glad they show that at the end of the day, Takayanagi is a human, and what it means to be a teacher...it's complicated and hard. All choices lead to bad ends, so what can he do? What can anyone do in that situation?

I agree that at the very least, the kid needs to go to a professional psychiatrist and such. Teachers are humans, and they're trained to teach, not act like a psychiatrist. Takayanagi manages it to some degree, but even he has a limit.

On another note, yes, page 26 shows what seems like a scar...damn.

@IJustMadeThiSToComment The moral dilemma that his mentor raised in page 13. The hug is only a short term solution and he is dealing with only one student. What if 10 more students with similar situation join his class? He can't favour any student in particular for that would make it worse. There are too many variables to factor in. They have to treat each student equally. "What is the "most virtuous " path we can take?" - I think this is the question that killed him from inside; an ethics teacher who can't decide on the "most virtuous" path.
