@jouyato If you recall from chapter 7, Tokigawa has some pretty heavy-duty issues at home that not even Ethics-sensei could resolve.

Pretty much anything we do can strenuous on the human body even if we aren't aware of it but we don't categorize every form of strenuous activity the same way. Sports or exercise, in the majority of cases, can be a net positive if you keep with it and in those cases you could easily come out with saying that recreational activities help people more on a physical and mental level. You don't improve yourself with this form of self-harm. You're just suffering alone and using your own methods that lead to a vicious cycle which is why you seek help. With your logic we should then allow other strenuous activities and market them as hobbies such as physically or mentally abusing others or worse to relieve themselves of the stress.

I wonder if this self stress relief is the same as those who practice flagellant in medieval times.

An eccentric kid with a pension for self-harm/pity and an abused recluse with difficulties in finding connections...that’s quite a dangerous combo there.
I just feel extra bad for the guy who tried his hardest making a friend over a game only to be reminded of trauma.

Did people really read the chapter? If you look into her thoughts, about how she’s bored of it all and wants to die and stuff, she’s probably actually depressed but doesn’t know it.

This is a great, great chapter. Realistic to the extreme.
Besides, I’m studying philosophy in college so it’s totally my jam...

@FrameE I'm not an expert when it comes to religious things or medieval times but doing some light reading self-flagellation wasn't all to prevalent as there isn't any solid statistics of the times. It was seen as a form of initiation as it could be seen that the body is sinful and it must be punished if one were to get close to God just as Jesus did before being put on the cross. This sort of act still occurs today and I wouldn't be surprised if the relief they are getting from this act comes from the stressors of not being as close to God as possible or that they are sinful creatures.

The latter part of this chapter is intense, jesus. This chapter is great. I admit it's realistic (to the point that I flinch). I love this manga as always. Thanks for the update!
Tokigawa is the boy who (first?) broke down Takayanagi in the previous chapters, right? I'm glad we got to see him again! His arc ended in...quite a cliffhanger, you can say. Maybe his arc will be resolved once for all here.
I'm down for these two kids to be friends, even if they can only bond over a mobage for a while.
By the way, the girl with her BL fantasy is relatable (laughs). I'd also scream if Takayanagi smiles for some reason towards me.

Yay, more ethics. Right after the Good Place finale too

And THAT'S what being "triggered" is, and why it's so harmful when people use it so lightly, make jokes about triggers, or purposely go out of their way to trigger someone because they don't believe them. Poor kid has seems to have some real bad PTSD. The incident here isn't even the worst case scenario either...

But man, they are covering a difficult subject again. Depression comes in all forms, and it isn't necessarily always because of something that makes you sad, like many might think. Depression can be just a lack of emotion or proper release, and cutting yourself is definitely not the best way to do it

If you do find yourself wanting to hurt yourself for release, or are currently cutting yourself, holding an ice cube may help. I don't know if it will for everyone, but I have a friend who was recovering from depression and trying to stop herself from cutting herself, and her therapist suggested this. It still took a long time, and ideally you would stop self inflicted pain altogether, but that is an understandably long process, and cold pains from an ice cube are significantly less harmful than slitting wrists. Note: this is NOT a replacement for real help, just a transitioning tool that may or may not even work for you

I love how everyone in the class was surprised and scared but the blonde mute dude was like "Uh, curious".

@ceiye people making jokes and think a little of being triggered because (for example) there are people who say they have PTSD eventhough they never go to war or actually in a traumatic event.

It's weird how this manga gives me a sense of catharsis even when the subject matter is so uncomfortable.

The assumption with self-harming activities is that the user is self-dependent, that they have the "authority" to do what they like without needing to explain their reasons to others.

As long as Yuri relies on her mother's resources, her mother will always question her actions. An inability to explain her stance will weaken whatever leverage she'll need down the line for her self-dependence.

Yuri's throwaway line: "It'd be nice if he'd cut his hair." suddenly makes Tokigawa's look make sense with the events from the next chapter.

Tokigawa had an intense reaction to Yuri cutting herself. He screams at her about why she would do so without "being told to do so". In chapter 7, we can see Tokigawa has a huge scar across his forehead.

Tokigawa was probably abused very badly and has a phobia of sharp objects, so something like cutting his hair is absolutely impossible for him.
